redmeg8.typepad.com > alltaglich: a drawing-a-day project

May 3rd

May 3rd

I drew this while watching the pre-Kentucky Derby programming on TV. I'm a huge Debry fan... always have been. :)

I was surprised that I hadn't sketched a pop tab before now for this project. Anyway - it's waaaaay simpler than the other stuff I've been posting of late... but, it's something.

It sucks being uninspired... I've been writing down lots of ideas, but I've been totally intimidated by the blank page lately. Maybe I'm just tired.

Triptych No. 1: Egg Detail

Triptych No. 1: Egg Detail

Detail of one of the first triptych images. This whole image was created to enter in a show in Detroit. Not entirely "drawing-a-day", but, I thought some of you might like to see it. :)

Triptych No. 1: Pod Detail

Triptych: No. 1

Triptych: No. 1

The first triptyph in a series all revolving around natural subjects in sets of three.
Not entirely "drawing-a-day", but, I thought some of you might like to see it. :)

PS> This piece will be in a show at The Scarab Club in Detroit from May 29 - June 29th with a reception on June 6th. Come out and say hi!

Drawing of a dead fly, part of an entry I'm creating for a show in Detroit. The scan is a little dark and doesn't convey the warmth of the grey very well.

And, happy coincidence! Illustration Friday's theme this week is "FAIL"! I think this fits that, don't you? ;p

April 5th

Many of you will know this little contraption - the adapter for a Mac laptop. It was sitting on the table and I had one of those "That's sketchable" moments. :)

This is a pretty quick little sketch.

April 2nd

Happy Birthday to my Eric. A little behind schedule... well, at least here... :)

March 1st

March 1st

Yes, it's filed under "J" for 'junk' in my sketchbook. :)
I just grabbed a small pile of stuff out of my desk drawer and went to town.

-- insert John Water's "Pecker" joke here --
Hee hee - I was inspired by a photograph that the incredible Keri Smith posted the other day, actually. You just never know what objects will be fun to draw until you try, I say. And this was super-fun.

February 10th

February 10th

I found this little guy on our front door mat. It took me many days to draw him, slowly and carefully. It almost felt like doing a memorial drawing, or something similar.

A portrait of our love. ;p

PS> This is drawing #120... this means I have enough drawings for a 3rd book!

Eric bought me this little heart necklace when we were on our honeymoon in Amsterdam. The shop owner was from Iran and he was very nice. The front of the heart is blue enamel.

And yes, I totally dug drawing that chain. ;p

You give me a giant sheet of paper (tablecloth made of paper) and set out crayons, and, well... I can't help myself, Macaroni Grill!!

January 24th

January 24th

Now I can say, I've truly drawn it all. ;D

Money plants are something I've always associated with my Mom. They're very nostalgic for me and I love them. Maybe it's time I get some for around here...

January 16th

January 16th

After completing this piece, I've nearly filled the 'C' page of my sketchbook! Quite a feeling of accomplishment, to be sure.

January 13th

Eric got us fancy schmany new earplugs for concert-going. Apparently, they're supposed to protect your hearing but not destroy the quality of the music. It would rock if they do what they claim... we shall see!

January 10th

January 10th

I shouldn't be up... it's 1am and I have school and lots of sleep that needs to happen desperately. And, you know, this is gonna sound lame, or cheesy, or something, but... I think I would feel a massive let down if I didn't stay up and upload these drawings every night. I missed last night (the 9th) and I'm kicking myself.

Have I mentioned how fortunate and blessed I feel that you all are paying any sort of attention to this project? No? Well, shame on me then. This has become one of my grestest sources of pride and accomplishment lately. Thank you for the words of encouragement and support. It means a helluva lot.

One of my all-time favourite games is Boggle. I'm quite an accomplished Boggle-r, I must confess, and as a result no one will play me. I think Eric harbors notions that one day he will defeat me, but alas, I think it's folly to aim to high ;p

January 7th

January 7th

A really quick little sketch tonight for a myriad of reasons: first day of school, I'm very under the weather, it's kinda late, and a severe thunderstorm headed our way. Hope your night is less eventful! :)

January 6th

January 6th

Oops! I forgot to upload my drawing from yesterday. Sigh. Anyway, garlic is not easy to draw... very tricky, despite its innocent-looking shape.

January 5th

January 5th

It's 3am as I type this, so, I really don't have the brains to write much more than that ;p

January 4th

January 4th

I've said this before, but, it's true for this piece too - I've had my eye on it as a subject pretty much from day one. I won't lie - a lot of the reason I didn't pick up it before now was intimidation. It's a super-complicated object and metal is very hard to drawing convincingly. Anyway... I'm pretty pleased with this, all-in-all. Hope you like it.

EDM is such a great resource for ideas when you're stuck trying to find something to draw. I dunno how long it would've taken me to think of drawing a kitchen sponge had it not been on their trusty list.

January 2nd

January 2nd

I took inspiration from my Everyday Matters Group and did challenge #92 - "Draw a brown paper bag". It was soooo enjoyable and a true challenge. There's so much subtly going on.

January 1st

January 1st

See if you can find what business establishment this matchbook is from. I highly recommend the place AND my Mom tells me that I was there many, many years before I went as an adult. In fact, I was a fetus at the time! ;p

December 9th

December 9th

Mmm... my hands smell like nutmeg after cracking this whole nut to draw it. So Xmas-y - I love it! This is another spice Eric snagged for me... it's near and dear to my heart as my parents have always called this spice "NutMegan". ;p

December 8th

December 8th

Eric says that there are a few things that are really symbolic of who I am, and one of them is anise (and another one is pencil). He grabbed a bottle of star anise when we were shopping last weekend knowing that I'd love it.

December 1st

December 1st

We found Fruit Gems at the grocery store today!! I have vivid memories of eating these when my Mom would take us along to the bank when we were kids. The teller would give each of us one. They're just jellied/gumdrop-ish candies by Sunkist. Mmmm.... nostalgia!

November 25th

November 25th

A little spool of thread that my Mom used to fix two Bobo dog toys over Thanksgiving weekend.

November 21st

November 21st

Our neighbor's small maple tree started shedding these lovely sinister leaves. It was a challenge to draw/paint this because the color is really rich and I didn't want to overdo it.

Woo hoo! This is my 100th upload to this project!!

November 20th

November 20th

I drew this while waiting for class to start tonight. Last class until next week - woo hoo!

November 17th

November 17th

I keep a list of things that I think would be interesting to draw and I used it last night to come up with this one. I really like the idea of drawing/illustrating multiples of the same "theme".

I actually tied these myself using a website as my guide! It doesn't surprise me in the least that I loved the process of learning how to tie them.

November 12th

November 12th

I drew this during a break between classes in the cafeteria @ school.

November 10th

November 10th

I've wanted to draw some saltwater taffy for awhile now... I guess I just knew I'd enjoy the challenge of creating the image. I loved working on making the wrapper appear 3-dimensional and trying to make the candy look INSIDE it. I'd love to do more of these and sell prints... someday.

November 9th

November 9th

The shoes I'm wearing most often these days. As you might suspect from past drawings, I saw the stitching and thought - oooOOO! ;p

November 2nd - 8th

November 2nd - 8th

...and Illustration Friday's "Hat" theme. It's unfinished, but, I wanted to get my link up on IF before tomorrow, so... a new version will get uploaded as soon as I'm able. I kinda like the partially finished look, though. :)

November 1st

November 1st

Well, well, well... it's been a full YEAR since I started the drawing-a-day project. Can you believe that?! Granted, I haven't been able to keep up the "a-day" part, but, I've definitely done something "a-month" and I think that rocks!

We begin with Chex Mix of the Chocolate Peanut Butter variety which I have a major weakness for ;)

So... here we go again! Are you ready? You should do it too! :D

October 7th

October 7th

I did this piece (which was a long time coming) for this week's Illustration Friday theme, "open". This theme is a special one because there's voting to determine which pieces will be chosen to be included in a GROUP SHOW in California for Illustration Friday!

I would die if I was chosen, so, if you wanna be involved in the Illustration Friday community and vote, you need to create an account with them on their forums and then read the instructions on this page: http://illustrationfriday.com/blog/?p=528

Vote vote vote!! :)

PS> If want to see this piece larger, please head on over to its Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/redmeg8/1505962391/ (click on "all sizes")

October 1st

October 1st

Drew this in the cafeteria beneath the library at school. Mmm... chocolate. Good for what's ailing ya. For me that was getting exams back in subjects that are very hard for me and needing to crawl back in and hide in something I love... which wasn't chocolate, actually... but drawing :)

September 29th

September 29th

Every minute of every day now is filled... or could be. It's truly incredible! If I'm not studying, I'm illustrating and if I'm not doing that HOPEFULLY I'm relaxing, but... that's been rare.

I let myself today, though, and that led to this little drawing of an anvil Eric made IN JUNIOR HIGH. It's made out of metal and everything. I'm dually impressed by it, to say the least! About the only thing I had sculpted by the time I was in middle school was my own head... out of a bar of soap!

September 5th - 12th

September 5th - 12th

So, I'm back in school now and there's been precious little time for me to sketch. BUT, as my astute husband pointed out, I doodle like crazy in class, so, why not use those for this project?

These are the doodles from the margins of my Physics notebook during the 1st week of class. I'm thinking there'll be a lot of these pages in the coming weeks - 15 credit hours. Oy!

Welcome to my doodling brain!

September 1-5th

September 1-5th

I was SO excited when Illustration Friday's theme last Friday was "alphabet". I had been wanting to do a little dog breed alphabet for a loooong time now. I don't know why, but, it's been brewing since the beginning of the drawing-a-day project.

A: Airedale terrier; B: Bernese Mountain Dog; C: Cocker Spaniel*; D: Dachsund; E: English Bulldog; F: French Bulldog; G: Great Dane; H: Huskie; I: Irish Setter; J: Japanese Chin; K: Komondor; L: Labrador Retriever; M: Mastiff; N: Newfoundland; O: Old English Sheepdog; P: Pug; R: Rhodesian Ridgeback; S: Springer Spaniel; T: Tibetan Spaniel; V: Vizsla; W: West Highland White Terrier; X: Xoloitzcuintle (Mexican hairless) Y: Yorkshire Terrier

August 31st

August 31st

Hooray for a new challenge! I loved drawing this fancy dental floss dispenser (during the Cubs game which they WON! Woo hoo!). Yummy.

August 30th

August 30th

Back near the beginning of drawing-a-day, I had a artistic block and couldn't decide what to draw for several days. Eric went and got me some coral to solve the problem & it worked. :)

This is another one from the batch he bought. Figured it was time to sketch it.

August 27th

August 27th

A random inspiration and a pencil-only drawing, which I haven't done in awhile. Hope you like it :)

August 20th

August 20th

I've had a dried cicada in my box-o-nature-stuff-to-draw-one-day for several years. I FINALLY got up the nerve to draw him... and then it kinda became a painting ;)

I love how they have two sets of wings. So fun to draw.

August 17th-19th

August 17th-19th

The date is misleading on this one as I've been fussing with this drawing for a few days now. Getting the word out about the Drawing-A-Day books has been occupying my brain big time!

Anyway - I was so enamoured with marble collecting and the NAMES different patterns and color combinations are given that I thought I'd paint a few.
