I wish I had known this before she died. I'm not sure why I feel that way, but, unsung "heroes" have always been interesting to me. And, as a medical illustrator, I'm shocked I didn't know this before...
Odile Crick drew the first published version of the double-helix, her husband's Nobel Prize-winning discovery ... she died last week of cancer.

It's a lull for me, but, a time of healing for the subject(s) of one of my latest projects:

I'm the illustrator for this case concerning Ani & Tati, two Romanian twins who are joined at the head and are undergoing separation surgeries at Children's Hospital in Cleveland. Apparently, one of the twins had brain swelling and the process needed to be halted for a little while.
It's a fascinating case and the girls seem to be so wonderful. You can read more HERE and see some video as well. It's truly an incredible situation and I'm honored to be involved.

He's from Isreal. He mixes nature and machinery. I love his stuff.

"His work is concerned with ideology and use of the terms 'natural' and 'unnatual', 'reality' and 'fantasy'. As a visitor to one of his most recent exhibition, you would have been confronted by a kind of laboratory cloning; a cross between an eel and a human set of teeth with an aggressive wide-open mouth and a blood sucking leech for a body part."
But it's definitely in Nucleus Art's arsenal! I'm in awe of the animators in my field, honestly. It is simply beyond me to do this sort of work... or at least beyond my patience. So, rock on animators... I'll just go back to lovingly polishing my pencil collection.
So, I got me second set of MCAT scores back... amazingly, despite the dread I felt coming out of that test, I did almost EXACTLY THE SAME as the first time.
•The writing I thought was weak and lame? The same. (I got a nice high score in writing, I'm happy to report.)
•Verbal reasoning? The same. (I was kinda bummed here as I managed my time better and felt as if I'd really improved. Score still slightly above average, though, so, I'll take it.)
•Physical & biological sciences? Well... I dropped a point in each. Meh - there's really nothing I can do about that.
So. That phase of my medical school application process is complete. In the back of my mind, I have this itchy feeling about how this admissions thing is going to go down: I'll apply and get to the interview stage (which is a huge achievement, I know), and I'll either be deferred until next year, or put on the waiting list. Why do I anticipate this? Well, it pretty much comes down to my very low physical sciences score. You see, in the upcoming year I'll take all of the classes that are covered in that section of the exam and I'm thinking they'll want me to "prove" myself by taking the MCAT again in about a year.
What I'd LOVE for them to do is put me on a waiting list if they're on the fence about me. Then let me take the MCAT again (hell, third time's a charm) and await my improved scores. Then they can accept me without any lingering doubt. ;)
Anyway - this is assuming I even get to the interview stage... look at these stats:
Admissions Summary (2006)
The Red Cross is increasingly becoming a great place to sketch! I love drawing medical instruments... there's just something about the drafting and shading involved that I find immensely appealing.
Now, on to another topic at hand... I love the spleen. You may not have known this about me, but it's true. Honestly, I have no idea why... maybe it's the word and how fun it is to say... maybe it's because of its function as the body's blood cell graveyard. It's probably all of that and so much more.
Anyway - spleen-i-cons. Er... I don't even know if I'D go this far.
Some are pretty cute, though.

Then again, some are downright disturbing...

If it's not super-apparent, I changed a few things around these parts today.
I wanted to add a selection from my obscenely large bookmark collection, so now you have the pull-down menus to the right. They should give you a new window to view the link in each time.
Art I Love: self-explanatory... my favourite artists (that I've located thus far)
Pals: online and in real life
Places I Go: a variety of my favourite sites in general; stuff I find interesting
Music: sites to buy and listen to fantastic music; reference sites too
Genealogy: a selection of what I think are the most useful general genealogy sites on the web
IndieShop: shops I love, support, and plain think are worth seeing
You'll Find It: total miscellany; fun and funny sites; curiosities; DYI; kitties; you name it
Also, I popped in a Last.FM "quilt" there to the left that displays my top albums.
I hope the animation isn't annoying. Lemme know if it drives you crazy.
Lastly, I've posted a link under "Stalking Material" to my genealogy website. It's totally not complete or as media-rich as it will be, but, it's time to add it. I've found more distant cousins on the web than you can imagine, so, never say something isn't worth the time. :)
By the way, clicking on the genealogy link will probably reveal that I have some OCD going on. Just a warning ;)
Enjoy!
