The connections between the countries & places of "antiquity" and modern times has become clearer for me over the last decade or so. I must admit that I was ignorant of much of these connections when I was younger. I just never put two-and-two together until I started having an interest in history, etc. as a pass time and not just a school subject.
This is in part inspired by a classmate in my "Germs, Diseases, and The Plague" class who raised her hand and asked, "What's a Sioux?" the other day. No, it gets better! She bitched to me after class that she didn't know how to begin studying for our upcoming quiz because she didn't know where any of the places were that were discussed in class. She quipped, "I mean, where the hell is Cyprus, or whatever?"
I don't wanna make fun of her, really... it's more sad to me than anything. Sigh.
